I am a local Kent fisherman. When the trawlers come no-one wants to go fishing. If the local fishermen complain about their nets being destroyed they are threatened by a security person on board with a gun. The thing that I do not like is that the trawler uses a net that drags the bottom of the sea bed. It fishes in the areas that the fish go to breed and it takes the tiny little fish and everything else around. I want everyone to know how much damage the trawlers cost the local fishermen. Please help us stop them.

One of the people from the Amistad, Sister City Freetown/New Haven programme told me they saw the trawler at the beach when the Amistad crew, committee and supporters went to visit Banana Island. She was horrified to learn that these trawlers were being allowed to stael from Sierra Leone and the local fishermen. She wants to help stop this theft from the people of Sierra Leone.

The Minister of Tourism and Culture , Mr Hindolo Trye, is taking this issue seriously. He has already had a preliminary meeting with the Minister of Marine Resources where this matter has been raised.

very good article. well done Jane and JB for bringing attention to this important issue. we wait with great interest to see what the response of the koroma regime will be. a good early test of its commitment to justice for the long-suffering people of salone, and transparent and corruption-free governance.

I have been asked by the people of Kent and Banana Island to ask for a meeting to be arranged with the Ministers and local reps.
I will be sending that formal request in this week.
Let’s hope we get a positive response.

great work , its good to see that someone is taking notice of this wholesale pillage of the sea
with its attendant loss of livelihood for the locals
its a terrible pity that salone lacks at this point a functioning coastguard with rights to board and confiscate pirate fishing vessels.With the right pressure maybe the right people will wake up to the huge economic potential of their fishery before its stolen out from under their noses by ttrawlers with absolutely no right even to be in those waters . keep up the good work
